Curly Hair Routine – Not Curly Girl Method

I have had curly hair my whole life. When I was very young it was insanely curly and unmanageable. Especially because no one in my family had curly hair, so my mom was at a loss with how to tame my mane. Over the years, my hair has relaxed quite a bit naturally. My roots are definitely less curly now and on the second or third day of not washing my hair looks more wavy than curly.

Getting to a place where I like my hair has been a journey and I am still on that journey. There are some days there is nothing I would like more than to have straight hair. But alas, you always want what you can’t have. And my hairdresser growing up always told me, it’s better to work with your curly hair than against it.

I don’t follow the curly girl method that is very popular online. Nothing against this method, I just haven’t found it to work with my hair type – which is not super coarse or thick, but there is a lot of it. And my hair does get frizzy if I don’t do everything properly, which is great for me. I recently discovered a new product from Target that I think has helped me a lot, which is included below.

First I start off with a leave in conditioner. I am currently using this one below. I work that through the mid length to ends. Then I go in with the new Kristen Ess Curl Jelly. This stuff has a very interesting smell. Almost like male cologne? It is strong, but I kind of like it. I work that in and scrunch my hair upwards. This helps with curl formation. I will then finish with the R + Co shine cream if I need to. This product is good for second day hair as well.

Hope that helps someone in their curly hair journey. And I am always on the hunt for new curly hair products, so I can always update this if things do change, which I’m sure they will!
