What I’ve Read Recently – October

I got through three very different books this month and I enjoyed all of them. My goal is to read 24 books this year, and I am on track to get there! I have been using my Goodreads app to keep track of all the books I’ve read, as well as books I want to read next.

Malibu Rising – I had been hearing so much about Taylor Jenkins Reid and this book in particular (as well as Evelyn Hugo, which I definitely want to read). This was a good quick “beach” read. It follows a family in two different time periods. I got through it really fast and enjoyed it. 4/5 stars.

Crossroads – I saw this at my local bookstore displayed in front and picked it up on a whim. I didn’t really know what the book was about other than it was based in Chicago in the 1970s. It is a dense book and took me a little while to get through it. Franzen writes beautifully, but the book is a little religious for my taste. A great American novel though and worth picking up if you want something more challenging and a bit longer. 4/5 stars.

Bright Lights, Big City – My fiancรฉ just finished this and we swapped books (I read this while he read crossroads). It is a super short one based in New York in the 1980s. The main character is a mess, but it is an interesting read. The author does a great job of describing New York City and makes it come alive. 4/5 stars.

What I’m Reading Next

What Happens in Paradise – I found this Elin Hilderbrand book at my work’s communal book shelf and I know I like her books so I picked it up. There is something so lovely about her writing and I’m looking forward to something more light-hearted after the last two heavier books.
