Skincare Routine for Mid 20s Acne Prone Skin

A topic that I really enjoy is skin care, even when my skin doesn’t love me back. I struggled with some gnarly acne in high school and the only thing that really helped was Accutane. I’m thankfully past that point and now only get some break outs occasionally and I credit that mostly with my skincare routine. I will try out new products fairly frequently, but there are a few products I stick by and I know works. If you don’t know where to go and want to dip your toe in, I would really recommend The Ordinary. They have high quality products and are incredibly affordable. They are sold on Sephora now as well.

My skin type is mostly oily, and acne prone. I also do want to target signs of premature aging/prevent that from happening. So my products are tailored to those concerns. I start with a basic CeraVe cleanser and then into my toner. In the AM, I mix my hyaluronic acid for hydration and niacinamide for acne/oil control. I finish the morning with a moisturizer and sunscreen.

In the PM, I start with a double cleanse and then tone. The serums are different as well. I alternate nights between lactic acid and a retinol. I have the Sunday Riley one, which is very expensive, but I also like the Ordinary version. I am not currently married to a specific eye cream and I am trying one out that I have a sample size of. I will also switch masks around and I am currently using the Sunday Riley one for acne prone skin.

The most important things to do to improve your skin are the following in my opinion:

  • Always wash face after wearing make-up and make sure make up is removed thoroughly.
  • Do not over wash. This can strip the skin.
  • Wear sunscreen if out in the sun!
  • And if you are really struggling, I highly suggest going to the dermatologist. They can prescribe stronger medication and topical treatments than what’s sold at Sephora or Target.
