What I’ve Read Recently – June 2023

Still playing catch up with my reading posts! Bit of a slower month as two of the books were pretty dense, scientific-y type books and those took me a bitter longer to get through. My favorite book this month was definitely the Jellyfish one, which was recommended to me by one of my friends.

Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone – This book was a super interested mix of both the author’s personal life trying to take back her life after being in an uninspiring job, having two kids and discovering a new hobby – Jellyfish. This book has a lot of jargon and scientific speech, but overall I found those bits on jellyfish to be super interesting! 4/5

The Lager Queen of Minnesota – I went to college in Minnesota, so Minnesotan culture holds a special place in my heart so I was looking forward to reading this book, but I was kind of let down. Parts of the plot left me very frustrated. I did like how it described the beer making process, but overall this fell flat for me. 3/5

The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness and Healing in a Toxic Culture – This was a long read and it took me a long time to get through. It is somewhat technical and filled with some medical jargon, but I think it is still approachable for someone to read with no background in medicine. If you want to read more about mental health and how to live better, this could be for you. 4/5

What I’m Reading Next

Demon Copperhead – I’ve read one other book by Barbara Kingsolver (Poisonwood Bible) and she is such an amazing writer so I knew I had to read her new book. There was a long wait at the library, but I’m sure it will be worth it!
