What I’ve Read Recently – May

I have a lot of catching up to do with these book review posts! The positive here is that I have been reading a lot so that means that every month there are bound to be some good reads. This month, as is every reading month for me seems to be, is a mixed bag. A couple non-fiction self help and memoirs and then some novels. My favorite this month would have to be Pineapple Street, which is a great book to bring on vacation with you. Happy reading!

The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself – I went into this book thinking I wasn’t going to love it and buy everything the author was selling and I was right. This was a little too spiritual/preachy for me. If you like spiritual/self help books, this would be a great book, it just didn’t do it for me personally. 2.5/5

The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times – I really enjoyed Michelle Obama’s other book and when I finally got my hands on this from the lengthy wait list at the library I was thrilled! I did listen to this in audiobook format because Michelle narrates it, which I really enjoyed. It was similar to her first book, which I did end up liking more, but if you like Michelle, it is worth picking up! 3/5

Really Good, Actually – This was a very popular book for a minute it seemed and I saw it everywhere. There were some laughs in this book, but it actually was pretty sad for most of it. It talks a lot about being a young divorcée and how depressing the main character’s life is and I found it to be overall a bit of a downer. 3/5

Pineapple Street – This is the perfect book if you want to read something where there aren’t any stakes. This is about rich people doing rich people things. A great vacation book that I enjoyed, but looking back is a bit forgettable. 3.5/5

Olive Kitteridge – My friend loaned me her copy of this book and boy was it strange! Every chapter is told from a different character’s view point, but they all revolve loosely around one central character. I found it overall a bit hard to follow at points, but if that structure sounds appealing to you, definitely try it out. 3/5

Speak: Find Your Voice, Trust Your Gut and Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be – I am a big Peloton person so I am reading several of the instructor’s books and I was able to get my hands on Tunde’s first. This was a quick read and I enjoyed learning about her backstory. If you’re a Peloton person I think you’d like this. 3.5/5

What I’m Reading Next

Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone – One of my friends read this and absolutely loved it, so I will be picking this up next!
