What’s the Best Oat Milk? Does Oatly Make the Best?

You’re probably thinking, why does someone need to write a review on the different brands of oat milk. I am writing this said review and I can’t answer that. I guess I just feel passionately about high quality non-dairy milk and find myself with more free time recently? So continue reading if you are interested about the best oat milks and their many uses.

Oat milk has become very popular recently, so much so that the brand Oatly was sold out when I went to the grocery store BC (before corona). I think there are a few reasons for this. The first being that it is another kind of dairy-free milk. There are so many varieties that I haven’t even tried them all (mainly hemp milk??) I started to see oat milk lattes on more and more menus at some of the cafes and coffee shops near me. It seems that certain brands (more on that later), froth very well compared to other dairy-free milks. Oat milk also just seems very trendy and “in” right now. Like how almond milk was super popular a few years ago. I have tried what seems to be some of the more popular brands of oat milk and there is definitely a clear winner in my book.

*I linked the websites for all the oat milks so you can look in-depth at their nutrition facts if you feel so inclined.

My favorite: Oatly. By a country mile. Oatly froths the best, works well just as a creamer for coffee and also is good in smoothies. Definitely has the most flavor of all the oat milks I’ve tried. It seems like most coffee shops use Oatly as well. I buy mine at Whole foods.

Middle of the Pack: Califia Farms Oat milk, Califia Farms Oat Milk Barista Blend, Whole Foods Brand Oat Milk, and Chobani.

All of the above oat milk is good, but not as creamy and does not froth as well as Oatly. But works well in smoothies. They also carry this at Whole Foods and I’ve also gotten it in my Imperfect Produce boxes. Chobani can be found at Jewel as well. And all of these brands are about the same price.

Bottom Tier: Trader Joe’s Oat milk. I was so excited when I saw that this product had become available at my favorite grocery store. I picked up a carton and went straight home to add some to my coffee and smoothie. It does work well in smoothies, but does not froth at all and is not as creamy as the above oat milks and lacks the flavor that Oatly has. However, it is convenient to pick up, as I do all my grocery shopping at TJs and have to make a special trip to get one of the above oat milks. A big win for Trader Joe’s oat milk is that is by far the most affordable and they also make a shelf stable version.

That wraps up my oat milk review. What a hard-hitting piece of journalism. Maybe I will update this list as I try more brands of oat milk or include other forms of dairy-free milk. Hope this was helpful in your journey of finding the best oat milk.
